The Tuscan Maremma offers ideas for a truly unique holiday, between history, nature, sea and…. art!
In the small hamlet of Garvicchio, in the municipality of Capalbio, about 40 minutes by car from Saturnia and its spa, there is the Tarot Garden, the work of the brilliant French-American artist Niki de Saint-Phalle, who within 10 years approximately, he created a masterpiece of great beauty.
Various artists Rico Weber, Paul Widemer, Dok van Winsen, Sepp Imhof, Isabelle Le Jeune, Pierre Marie Le Jeune, Marino Karella and Jean Tinguely, Niki’s husband, collaborated in the creation of this artistic garden.
The Park presents itself as one of the main attractions of the Maremma area, a place to visit and appreciate for its particularity, inside there is in fact no pre-established route that leads to a guided tour, but rather, precisely at the request of the artist who is responsible for its creation. The visit to the Garden takes place in a free and independent manner, so that everyone can have the opportunity to appreciate this work of art independently, according to their own emotions.
The Tarot Garden houses 22 statues, depicting the characters of the Tarot Cards, the statues reach significant dimensions, up to 15 meters in height and were made of concrete and decorated with mosaics of stones, mirrors and colored glass.
When visiting the park you will happen to encounter the High Priestess, the Magician, the Wheel of Fortune, the Empress, the Sun, the Tree of Life, the Hanged Man, Justice, the Lovers, the Prophet, the Emperor, the Tower, Temperance, Death, the Devil, the Fool, the World, the Force, the Pope, the Moon, the Chariot, the hermit, the Star and the Judgment.
How to reach the Capalbio Tarot Garden
By car from the south:
A12 motorway towards Civitavecchia – Civitavecchia/Viterbo junction E840 – near Capalbio follow along the Strada Statale 1 towards Pescia Fiorentina/Chiarone – continue on Strada Pescia Fiorentina Chiarone up to Garavicchio “Giardino dei Tarocchi”.
By car from the north:
A1 motorway – exit Firenze Certosa – Florence/Siena connection – direction Grosseto – SS1 Aurelia direction Rome – follow the signs for Capalbio – Garavicchio “Giardino dei Tarocchi”.
