An enchanting village in the Tufo Area, in the innermost territories of the Tuscan Maremma, Sorano is a characteristic town of medieval origin.

Located about 30 km away from Saturnia, Sorano stands on a tuff rock.

Built in medieval times, Sorano was born as a city under the control of the Aldobrandeschi family, subsequently, starting from the second half of the 13th century, the center became a dominion of the Orsini counts, to then pass to the Sienese, to the Medici family and to be then included, starting from 1860, to the Kingdom of Italy.

Walking through the streets of its historic center you will notice how the town has a purely medieval style, a peculiarity that is easily found in the oldest homes and monuments.

Its historic center houses:

Orsini Fortress, the main building of the town, was built during the Middle Ages and over the centuries it served as the residence of the Aldobrandeschi first and then of the Orsini Counts
Collegiate Church of San Niccolò, built in the Middle Ages and custodian of important paintings and frescoes, is presented in classical style
Porta di Sopra, which is located in the upper part of the town and from which you can enjoy a panorama that extends over the Maremma countryside
Palazzo Comitale, dating back to the Renaissance
Masso Leopoldino, historic defensive site of the Tuscan city, built during the Middle Ages but took on its current connotations only in the 18th century
