A few kilometers from Orbetello and overlooking the panoramas of the coast of Ansedonia, Cosa is an ancient city of Roman origins.

Founded in 273 BC, it is located within the famous tourist resort of Ansedonia, a few kilometers from the village of Orbetello and its lagoon, the Roman city is approximately 40 minutes from Saturnia.

The city was founded in a strategic place from a commercial point of view, due to its proximity to the sea. Originally the city had a dense network of communication routes and roads, with well-defined neighborhoods and was divided into two main areas:

– the Acropolis, or the area dedicated to sacred rites and religious functions
the Forum, whose purpose was to welcome the political activity of the Cosa community

Important was the port of the Roman city, on the beach the Portus Cosanus, to which, around the 1st century BC, other buildings were added, such as piers and breakwaters; behind the port there was also Lake Burano, which was initially used to breed fish.

After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the city of Cosa began to suffer a slow but inexorable decline. During the Middle Ages it saw the presence of a population and a military settlement was built there, but following this episode it was progressively abandoned.

Today it presents itself as one of the most important archaeological sites in the Maremma, a place to be discovered to relive the ancient history of this territory, the glorious history of the Roman people, combining the charm of history with the enchantment of nature, which here ranges from hills up to the Tyrrhenian sea, with the coast of Ansedonia, a precious seaside resort.
